In 2022, it was estimated to be about 55 Million Vape Users in the United States. Let’s look at a broad overview of those 55M vapers and the effects of CO2 emissions that is easy to understand. For this example, we will only factor the lithium battery (18650) inside the vape pen/mod to make it easier to quantify. 

Let us get started.

Now imagine those 55M people each vaping 2 disposable vape pens a month and simply tossing them away after use. By doing so we are emitting over 5,000 Metric Tons per month of CO2 emissions and well over 63,000 metric tons per year and that is on a low end. Keep in mind we are only calculating the carbon footprint of the battery by itself, not including all the other components and materials along with the emissions from supply chains from cradle to gate.

So the question is how much will this single object (lithium-ion battery) emissions affect our landfills, waterways, oceans, and our climate over the next 1 to 5 to 10 years? While vape users are projected to increase yearly as well.

And another big problem is that Disposable vapes can’t be reused, they can’t be recycled properly, and they can’t legally be thrown in the trash. What are consumers supposed to do with these products?
